Cactus

When most of us think of the desert, our thoughts would not be complete if we did not think of the cactus. Cactus plants are fascinating because they have adapted to the dry conditions of desert life and can live without too much water. The process of evolution that a plant needs to go through to make it adapt to those conditions is interesting. Essentially they need to be able to store large amounts of water. The cactus has these conditions which makes them ideal for survival in the desert. We also know them as the plant with the prickly hairs. This is also another adaptive feature that helps prevent predators from eating it or from it getting damaged by other animals.

If you want to learn about the cactus plant, there are a few things you can do. There are people who have devoted their lives to studying about these plants. If you can find their books, that would make your search much easier. Experts have a very selective and very comprehensive knowledge. If you can read one or two volumes by them, then this would help you learn about the subject.

However, experts often have a very select and technical knowledge. They often assume that you know certain things that you may not know. If you are a complete beginner when it comes to learning about the cactus, your best bet is to read a very basic book or look it up in the encyclopedia. The advantage to these resources is that they often assume that you do not know anything. They start from the beginning. However, if you already have a basic knowledge you will get more out of an expert source.

It is really neat to see these plants in person. If you find yourself in the desert, it may be fun to get a field guide of the local plants and identify some of them. Even though we think that cactus plants are a select species, there are actually a lot of different kinds. The numbers are vast and each plant has its own special features. Learning about the plants in a particular desert area is a good way to understand the area itself.
